As a father of two beautiful girls, most of the books I get to read are children stories. While most are about princesses and farm animals they all aim to teach some sort of life lesson. What I like most about these books is that those life lessons are really universal. Regardless of the age and the environment you are in those life lessons are still applicable. It is because of that, two children stories that once sat in girls' bookcase have now found a nice new home at my work desk.
The first book to make the switch from playroom to workroom was The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper. This is a classic story about believing in yourself and accomplishing things that may seem greater than you. I remember reading this story as a kid and when things seem like too much at work just looking up from my computer monitor and eying this book is enough to remind that I need to think positively and keep on working through because eventually I can with a little support from those around me.
The second and most recent book to join me at work is Oh, the Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss. This book was actually recommended to me by my manager one day. After reading it the story instantly struck a chord with me. I won't give away the story but for anyone starting a new stage in their life I think this is a must read.
It may seem silly but keeping even simple things near you like a children's story can help inspire you at work. When the day starts to drag on or that project seems like it will never end these books provide me the comfort and motivation to keep on working. What do you keep at your work place that inspires you? And if you have any other book recommendations for me or my girls pass them along in the comment section.
