As someone who often follows Hal Higdon’s 12-week running plans during the summer, I’m a big supporter of Iowa road races. They take away some of the monotony involved with constant, solo-running. This summer, there are several classics that promise to be well-worth the time.
Most Iowa runners are well-aware of “Iowa’s Distance Classic,” Dam to Dam. On May 30, the race will celebrate its 30-year anniversary, with its annual 20k race. (http://www.damtodam.com/index.htm)
Though Iowa summers are scattered with a plethora of local races, this June will be host to Hy-Vee’s Triathlon, open to 3,000 amateur competitors and held on the 28th. The event promises both spectators and athletes a weekend full of fitness-fun. (http://hyveetriathlon.com/)
July fourth is celebrated by a majority of Iowans, many of them runners in one of over 30 races. I have never seen or participated in an Independence Day run, but most sound like something well worth the effort. A complete listing can be found at: http://www.fitnesssports.com/races.july.html.
As an annual participant of Adel’s Sweet Corn Festival and an all-around fan of sweet corn-eating, I cannot wait for the August 8, Sweet Corn 5k. I plan on spending a weekend running and buying almost unhealthy amounts of locally-grown sweet corn. (http://www.sweetcorn5k.net/Default.aspx)
Whether training for October’s Des Moines Marathon, or just running for fun/fitness, this summer promises to be a great time for Iowa runners.
