This year represents an unprecedented opportunity to impact Iowa through the service of VISTA members. Recruitment, and plenty of it, will be critical! The Iowa Office of the Corporation for National and Community Service is working hard to get the word out about these opportunities. They are asking each of you to help distribute this information through your networks - personal and professional. Due to the economic downturn, many people are looking for opportunities; we need to get the word out. The VISTA Summer Associate Program is a short term service opportunity that enhances existing VISTA programs by providing individuals who will work alongside year-round VISTAs for an intense summer service experience. Iowa VISTA will have three Summer Associate Programs in 2009 serving with VISTA Flood Recovery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Human and Civil Rights VISTA Program across the state, and the Oakridge Neighborhood Services in Des Moines. AmeriCorps VISTA helps individuals and communities implement grassroots solutions designed to alleviate poverty. Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, the program places individuals at nonprofit organizations and public agencies that actively serve low-income areas by mobilizing people, businesses, and organizations with the goal of creating sustainable healthy communities.
