Get Involved: Art Noir
Film noir; a term used to define the black and white crime dramas of the 40’s and 50’s filled to the brim with moral ambiguity and sexual intrigue. This genre slipped into the background after Hollywood blockbusters took hold but the old classics are a cult favorite when movie night rolls around. The Des Moines Art Center’s affiliate group Art Noir references the gritty charm of the old black and white films, bringing edgy art to the younger population of our state’s capital. Started in 2006 by Nathan Hewitt and Brando Guerrero, the group aims to engage Des Moines’ young adults in Art Center programming, functioning as a volunteer organization, an entertainment opportunity and an artistic outlet. Art Noir sets up regular programs bringing in resident artists, writers and musicians to facilitate conversations on art and culture within the community. “When people become interested in the Art Center they also take an active role in other aspects of the local art scene,” said Lauren Rusco the Art Center’s liaison to the group in an email interview. “They start attending events like the Des Moines Arts Festival, collecting art, and advocating art-related programs in the schools or community. Also, the more people get involved and begin to have a stake in the community, the less likely they are to leave for other cities.” For more information about Art Noir and their upcoming Big Hair Ball visit http://www.desmoinesartcenter.org/artnoir.

Mentors Make It Happen
When I started my career at Wells Fargo I was lucky to work for a manager who encouraged her team members to find a mentor. My mentor quickly became one of my most valuable relationships at work and a source for immediate feedback. Since that year I have been convinced that a good mentor is the most powerful tool for managing a career. I met with my mentor at least monthly and normally early in the morning before the office got busy. Those were the days I was most excited to be at work. Having a mentor gave me access to whole new and bigger network than before. He introduced to a number of teams I would have never met in my day to day role which allowed me to grow new and stronger relationships in the company. My mentor also was my go to person for questions about the culture of the company. I knew that if I ever had a question on how or why did things happen he would answer and because we had grown a trusted relationship he would also cut through the corporate speak and give the straight story. I strongly encourage everyone to find a mentor who you can meet with and learn from. There are so many things I was able to take away from our meetings and the experienced it exposed me to continues to add value to my career every day.

What Do You Want To Do?
At some point in your career the question of what do you want to do is going to come up. This question can come from your friends, coworkers and if everything is going right, it should come from your manager. Coming from your manager this question is really asked to gauge how much thought you have given your career and should be treated with the same seriousness of any interview question. In reality this question is setting you up for the next steps of your career. When answering this question there are several mistakes that are easy to make and can limit your career choices. The first is not giving your self an out. It is great to have a clear picture of what you want but it is more important to understand that there may be opportunities you are not aware of and be more interested in. Giving yourself an out can be as simple as saying I see myself doing “x, y, z” however I would be open to other opportunities that have similar responsibilities. The second is not having an answer at all. It is not always reasonable to know what group or what title you want next. However you should have a mental list of skills you want to carry over to your next job. Providing a few bullets points of skills you would like to continue to develop can help your manager focus in on jobs responsibilities without limiting yourself to a specific group or role. Start preparing yourself now for the next time someone asks you “what do you want to do”, because your answer may just help determine your next job.
